Patna, NTPC has permanently shut down the Barauni Thermal Power Plant Stage-1 with a capacity of 220 megawatts. The company informed the stock market on Saturday that NTPC will permanently close the operation of Barauni Thermal Power Plant Stage-1 (two units of 110-110 megawatts each) from March 31, 2024. This power plant comprises two units of 110 megawatts each (Units 6 and 7).
Acquisition with a Capacity of 720 Megawatts
NTPC acquired the Barauni Thermal Power Plant (720 megawatts) from the Bihar State Power Generation Company on December 15, 2018. At the time of acquisition, the power plant, based on coal with a capacity of 720 megawatts, had two units of 110 megawatts each and two units of 250 megawatts each under construction. The project included Phase-1 (2×110 megawatts) and Phase-2 (2×250 megawatts). Union Power Minister R.K. Singh dedicated the unit with a capacity of 500 megawatts (two units of 250 megawatts each) under Phase-2 to the nation in November 2021.
Production was Costly
According to sources, production of electricity from both these old and worn-out units was quite expensive. Additionally, considering security standards, the decision to shut them down was taken. Now, electricity production will only be from the eighth and ninth units of Barauni NTPC Stage-2, with a capacity of 250-250 megawatts each, totaling 500 megawatts.
