In a landmark decision presided over by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Cabinet convened on Monday to endorse the Women’s Reservation Bill. This historic legislation is slated to come into effect in the year 2029.

The pivotal bill pledges a substantial 33 percent allocation for women in both the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies.

Prime Minister Modi convened this meeting following the inaugural session of Parliament’s special assembly held in the nation’s capital.

The Women’s Reservation Bill, a long-pending legislative proposal, seeks to rectify the gender imbalance prevalent in political representation. It endeavors to offer enhanced opportunities for women to actively engage in the legislative affairs of the country.

Despite its repeated introduction in Parliament since 1996, the bill has grappled with a myriad of political challenges and opposition, up until now. Advocates fervently contend that this legislation is indispensable for fostering gender equality and conferring upon women a more prominent role in decision-making capacities within the Indian government.

As of this publication, this momentous decision marks a watershed moment in India’s political landscape, propelling the nation towards a future of greater gender inclusivity and equitable representation.
