In a significant turn of events, Jharkhand’s ruling alliance has selected Champai Soren, the current Transport Minister, as the next Chief Minister. This decision comes amidst growing speculation over the potential arrest of the incumbent Chief Minister, Hemant Soren, by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a money laundering case linked to an alleged land scam.

Champai Soren’s Political Ascent

Champai Soren, who actively participated in the movement for the creation of the separate state of Jharkhand, emerged as the chosen leader of the Legislative Party. Speaking to reporters, Jharkhand minister Banna Gupta stated, “We have chosen Champai Soren as the leader of the Legislative Party. We came to the Raj Bhawan to request the Governor for the oath ceremony.” Congress MLA Rajesh Thakur confirmed, “CM Hemant Soren has decided to resign. Champai Soren has been chosen as the new leader of the Legislative party… All the MLAs are with us.”

High Drama Surrounding Hemant Soren’s ED Interrogation

The transition unfolded amidst high drama as Hemant Soren faced ED questioning. Security was tightened around the former CM’s residence, with Section 144 imposed in Ranchi. Protests erupted among Jharkhand Mukti Morcha workers against the central agency’s actions. In a surprising move, Soren filed an FIR against ED personnel over searches conducted at his Delhi residence, alleging harassment and an attempt to malign him and his community.

Soren’s Allegations and FIR

“The chief minister has repeatedly been harassed even though he is cooperating. He replied to ED questions on January 20. But, he was again summoned within a week. Isn’t it a deliberate attempt to defame his image and the government?” questioned a JMM supporter. Ranchi Senior Superintendent of Police, Chandan Kumar Sinha, confirmed the lodging of an FIR against senior ED officials. In the FIR, Soren alleged that the ED’s actions caused immense mental, psychological, and emotional harm to him and his family.
