Chirag Paswan’s Allegory: Bihar’s Development Hindered by Caste, a Modern-Day Ravan

In a symbolic reference on Vijayadasami, Chirag Paswan, the National President of the Lok Janshakti Party, subtly likened Bihar’s Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar, to the mythological demon king, Ravan. Aligning the essence of the Dussehra festival with the triumph of good over evil, Mr. Paswan underscored that Bihar, particularly its deeply entrenched caste system, represented a contemporary incarnation of the nefarious Ravan, impeding the state’s progress.

Addressing the media at the Patna airport, Mr. Paswan remarked, “Just as Dussehra signifies the conquest of righteousness over malevolence, I anticipate that the various ills afflicting Bihar, notably the caste-based social evils akin to Ravan, which have curbed the pace of development, will soon be vanquished.”

Additionally, Mr. Paswan vehemently dismissed the recent caste-based survey released by the Bihar government on October 2, categorizing it as a “political conspiracy.” He alleged that the government had manipulated the population figures of certain castes while diminishing the count of others, including the Paswan caste, to which he belongs.

The opposition voices in Bihar have echoed concerns regarding the caste-based survey report. Parties such as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Rashtriya Lok Janata Dal (RLJD) led by Upendra Kushwaha, and the Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP) led by Mukesh Sahani have all raised objections. Jitan Ram Manjhi, the founder of the Hindustani Awam Morcha Secular (HAM), noted that the surveyors had not consulted him. Mr. Kushwaha, in an act of protest, led a march to the Raj Bhavan and presented a memorandum to Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, soliciting the Governor’s intervention in addressing the concerns raised by the caste-based survey report.

While taking a swipe at the perceived deteriorating law and order in Bihar, Mr. Paswan acknowledged the increasing crime rates in the state but remained optimistic that this issue, too, would be resolved, allowing the path for development to continue. Furthermore, the Jamui MP responded to Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Prasad Yadav’s prediction that the BJP would face electoral losses in five states, underscoring the contentious political landscape in Bihar.

In a compelling allegory, Chirag Paswan has vividly illuminated the socio-political dynamics in Bihar, juxtaposing the mythological notion of Ravan with the contemporary challenges faced by the state. This narrative aptly captures the nuanced discourse on caste, development, and politics in the region.
