New Delhi: In a scathing critique, veteran Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has taken aim at the new Parliament building, suggesting it be renamed the “Modi Multiplex” or “Modi Marriot.” Ramesh expressed his reservations about the new edifice, describing it as “claustrophobic” and “like a maze.”
Ramesh lamented the transition from the old Parliament building, which he misses dearly, stating that the new structure aligns perfectly with the Prime Minister’s objectives but comes at the cost of democratic discussions. He asserted, “If architecture can kill democracy, the PM has already succeeded even without rewriting the Constitution.”
Highlighting the disparities between the old and new Parliament buildings, the Congress leader criticized the lack of coziness and the need for binoculars to facilitate interaction. “The old Parliament building not only had a certain aura but it facilitated conversations,” he remarked, noting the ease of movement between chambers in the former circular structure compared to the labyrinthine nature of the new building.
Ramesh raised concerns about the hindrance to quick coordination between the two Houses, describing the new building as “almost claustrophobic.” He bemoaned the loss of the simple pleasure of spending time in Parliament.
He also voiced the grievances of Secretariat staff, claiming that the new building’s design failed to consider the functionalities required for their work due to the absence of consultations.
Ramesh concluded by suggesting that a more suitable purpose for the new Parliament building might be found following a regime change in 2024.
The new Parliament building was inaugurated on May 28, with official entry into Parliament occurring on September 19 during Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations.
