In a significant move, the Ministry of Defence has finalized two contracts totaling Rs 802 crore for the procurement of military equipment. The contracts, signed on January 4, 2024, in New Delhi, fall under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) category, emphasizing the commitment to indigenous manufacturing and private sector participation in defence production.
Under the agreements, M/s Jupiter Wagons Limited secures a contract worth Rs 473 crore for the procurement of Qty-697 Bogie Open Military (BOM) Wagons. Additionally, M/s BEML Ltd clinches a contract valued at Rs 329 crore for Qty-56 Mechanical Minefield Marking Equipment (MMME) Mark II.
The Defence Ministry highlights that both BOM Wagons and MMME will be manufactured using equipment and sub-systems sourced from indigenous manufacturers. This move aligns with the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, promoting self-reliance in defence production.
Bogie Open Military (BOM) Wagons, designed by the Research Design and Standard Organization (RDSO), play a crucial role in mobilizing Army units. These special wagons transport various military equipment, including light vehicles, artillery guns, BMPs, and engineering equipment, from peacetime locations to operational areas. The ministry emphasizes that these wagons facilitate rapid and simultaneous induction of units and equipment during conflict situations.
The Mechanical Minefield Marking Equipment (MMME) Mark II, designed for cross-country operations, carries a complete load of stores and efficiently marks minefields with minimal time and manpower. This equipment, based on an in-service high mobility vehicle with advanced mechanical and electrical systems, aims to enhance the operational capability of the Indian Army by reducing timings for minefield marking during operations.
The Defence Ministry underscores the significance of these acquisitions, stating that they contribute to both operational efficiency and the country’s commitment to international protocols on conventional weapons.
