New Delhi, The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast indicating a continuation of dense fog alerts in specific regions. The affected areas include Punjab, Haryana, and certain parts of Uttar Pradesh. Additionally, northeastern states, namely Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, and Manipur, are expected to experience dense fog conditions until December 14.
In more specific terms, isolated areas of Punjab are likely to witness dense fog during the morning hours on Wednesday. The visibility concerns associated with dense fog have already been observed, as reported in Moradabad City, Uttar Pradesh, where residents coped with significantly reduced visibility due to the dense fog and cold waves on Tuesday morning. Notably, the chilling temperatures across Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, North Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh have ranged from 6 to 10°C in the last 24 hours.
Given the impact of the cold wave, the Uttar Pradesh government has proactively allocated ₹120 crore for the Relief Department. These funds will be utilized to provide temporary shelter, food, clothing, and medical facilities to the affected population.
Furthermore, the IMD has highlighted the broader meteorological context, indicating that a cyclonic circulation over the equatorial Indian Ocean and adjoining Bay of Bengal, expected to move in a west-north direction, may lead to isolated heavy rainfall over southern Tamil Nadu and Lakshadweep on December 15 and 16. This activity could extend until December 17, affecting South Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
In a previous alert, the IMD had issued a ‘yellow’ alert for Bihar due to dense fog conditions. The IMD classifies fog visibility into categories such as ‘very dense,’ ‘dense,’ ‘moderate,’ and ‘shallow,’ based on specific visibility ranges.
These weather conditions highlight the ongoing challenges posed by winter weather patterns, emphasizing the importance of proactive measures and public awareness in dealing with such climatic phenomena.
