New Delhi, In a strategic move, Delhi University (DU) has announced the conversion of Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute (VPCI) into a multispecialty hospital, marking a significant expansion in healthcare facilities. The university has allocated over 12.70 acres of land for the purpose, as approved in the Executive Council’s meeting, DU’s highest decision-making body.
Vice Chancellor Professor Yogesh Singh emphasized the pressing need to enhance and upgrade the institute to offer comprehensive treatment for various ailments, including pulmonary diseases, under one roof. The proposal for land allotment garnered support during detailed discussions involving faculty members of VPCI and external experts.
Established in the 1950s, the Patel Chest Institute, initially focused on chest diseases research, has sought to become a full-fledged medical college. The postgraduate medical institution, funded entirely by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, is a University of Delhi-maintained facility located at the heart of the main campus.
The decision to allot 12.76 acres of vacant land in Dhaka, near Mukherjee Nagar, for the expansion of VPCI reflects the university’s commitment to enhancing diagnostic and research facilities for pulmonary diseases. Additionally, discussions during the Executive Council meeting included the allotment of land for constructing the University College of Medical Sciences building and hospital.
During Zero Hour, the meeting addressed the letter from Delhi’s Education Minister, Atishi, to the Central Government regarding 12 colleges funded by the Delhi Government. In response, the Executive Council decided to form a committee, tasked with initiating work immediately and submitting a report within 15 days.
The approved transformation of Patel Chest Hospital into a multispecialty hospital aligns with DU’s vision to strengthen medical infrastructure and provide advanced healthcare services to the community.
