In a resounding call for a reimagined global economic landscape, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasized the pressing need for a re-globalisation that is both diversified and democratic, empowering the Global South to rise above its existing consumer-oriented status. Speaking at the B20 Summit convened by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Jaishankar underscored that the Global South cannot remain subservient to a limited pool of suppliers and must evolve into a pivotal producer and contributor.

Jaishankar cogently stated, “The Global South has endured not only an incomplete assimilation of economic benefits but has also grappled with unsustainable debts stemming from obscure initiatives. This incremental crisis was expedited by the confluence of debt, Covid, and conflict. The impetus now lies in nurturing a re-globalisation that is diversified and democratic, fostering multiple centers of production alongside consumption. This metamorphosis is where the private sector can wield its transformative power.”

The minister’s address, titled ‘Role of Global South in Emerging World 2.0,’ illuminated the pivotal role of the G20 in promoting economic growth and development, contingent upon addressing the pivotal concerns of the Global South—ranging from debt management and sustainable development to climate action, food security, and women-led advancement.

Against the backdrop of the Covid pandemic and recent volatilities, Jaishankar pressed for the creation of resilient and dependable supply chains, underscoring the urgency of this endeavor. Simultaneously, he noted that digital realms are increasingly driven by apprehensions concerning trust and transparency.

Jaishankar astutely asserted, “The past years’ volatility has underscored the paramountcy of strategic autonomy. A just, equitable, and participative global order can only be realized through equitable investment, trade, and technology choices that empower the Global South.

The minister’s visionary perspective not only encapsulates the urgency of rectifying existing imbalances but also reimagines a more inclusive, cooperative, and robust global economic landscape that dismantles the existing hierarchies and champions the prospects of the Global South.
