Gujarat, historically known as a dry state, has maintained a strict prohibition on the production, storage, sale, and consumption of alcoholic beverages. However, recognizing the transformative role of GIFT City (Gujarat International Finance Tec-City) as a thriving global financial and technological hub, the state government has made adjustments to the liquor prohibition laws within the GIFT City campus in Gandhinagar.
The move is well-received by the trade fraternity, as it allows for the provision of “wine and dine” facilities within the GIFT City campus. This is expected to enhance trade connections for the state, particularly within the international business community.
According to an official statement released last week, the relaxation in liquor laws aims to nurture a “global business ecosystem” within GIFT City. The strategic decision is anticipated to benefit not only the residents, employees, and officials based in GIFT City but also extend to visitors and stakeholders involved in various economic activities within the area.
The prohibition department of the state emphasized GIFT City’s significance as a hub of economic activities and deemed it necessary to adapt to the changing requirements of a global audience. Under the new policy, hotels, restaurants, and clubs within the GIFT City area will be eligible for permits to offer “wine and dine” facilities.
While patrons will be allowed to consume liquor within these facilities, the sale of liquor bottles will not be permitted. However, liquor access permits will be granted to owners and employees of companies operating in GIFT City, with temporary permits extended to their visitors.
