In a contentious move, Zahid Rameez, a member of the Progressive Party of Maldives Senate, has stirred controversy by questioning the cleanliness and services of Lakshadweep Island following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit. Rameez took to social media, stating, “How can they be so clean?” and expressing doubt about Lakshadweep’s ability to compete with the Maldives in providing services.

The comments have triggered strong reactions on Indian social media, with calls for a boycott of the Maldives. Rameez also criticized India for allegedly copying Sri Lanka without providing further context.

Prime Minister Modi visited Lakshadweep on January 2, laying the foundation for development projects worth ₹1,150 crore. The projects span technology, energy, water resources, healthcare, and education. PM Modi, during his visit, emphasized the deep connection he felt with the islanders, referring to them as his “kudumbangangal” (family members) in Malayalam.

The controversy has ignited a debate on diplomatic decorum and the need for respectful discourse between nations.
