New Delhi: The Indian government has taken a significant step towards realizing a momentous project, earmarking a budget of INR 120 billion for the expansion of railway infrastructure in the northeastern region. This financial allocation is a pivotal milestone in the ambitious Bhutan-India railway link project.
The heart of this endeavor involves complete funding for a 57.5-kilometer railway line that will seamlessly connect Kokrajhar in Assam, India, to Gelephu in Sarpang, Bhutan. Expected to be completed by 2026, this initiative promises to redefine regional connectivity and enhance economic prospects.
Just a month ago, India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar shed light on ongoing negotiations between India and Bhutan regarding this transformative railway connection. Stressing the potential benefits, he highlighted that authorities are currently in discussions for a railway link between Bhutan and Assam. He further emphasized Bhutan’s eagerness to open more avenues for tourism, which could significantly benefit Assam.
The proposed railway link between Gelephu and Kokrajhar, situated on the Assam border, has the potential to be a game-changer, boosting both trade and tourism, he concluded.
If reports hold true, this railway project could mark a breakthrough in facilitating the export of goods, fostering cultural exchange, and strengthening bilateral ties between the two nations.
It’s worth noting that Bhutan and India formally committed to this shared vision in 2005 when they signed a Memorandum of Understanding. This commitment solidified their joint aspiration to create an extensive railway network linking towns along their shared border.
As developments progress, the Bhutan-India railway link inches closer to becoming a reality, ushering in a new era of connectivity and cooperation. Bhutan shares a 605-kilometer border with India, making it the nation’s largest trading partner.
