In a recent diplomatic incident, India expressed concerns over derogatory remarks made by Maldives Deputy Minister of Youth Empowerment, Mariyam Shiuna, against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Maldives government, led by President Mohammad Muizzu, distanced itself from the comments, emphasizing the need for democratic and responsible expression. The Indian High Commissioner in Male has reportedly addressed the matter with Maldivian authorities.

Key Points:

1. The dispute arose following Shiuna’s disparaging remarks, including terms like ‘clown’ and ‘puppet,’ directed at PM Modi after his visit to the Union Territory of Lakshadweep.

2. The comments sparked outrage in India, leading to calls for boycotting travel to Maldives due to perceived anti-India sentiments.

3. Former Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed criticized Shiuna’s language, emphasizing India’s role as a “key ally” for the security and prosperity of the Maldives.

4. President Mohammad Muizzu’s government distanced itself from Shiuna’s remarks and pledged action against those making derogatory statements.

5. India raised concerns through diplomatic channels, highlighting the incident amid strained relations since Muizzu’s election.

6. The Maldives government’s alignment with the Arab world and Muizzu’s anti-India stance has further contributed to tensions.

Maldivian Politicians React:

Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih condemned the “hateful” language used against India, urging the preservation of the longstanding friendship between the two nations.
