In a recent statement, the Indian Navy highlighted a noteworthy shift in maritime incidents closer to the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The piracy incident involving MV Ruen, located approximately 700 nautical miles from the Indian coast, and the drone attack on MV Chem Pluto, about 220 nautical miles southwest of Porbandar, have raised concerns.
The Indian Navy, in coordination with national maritime agencies, is closely monitoring the situation. Emphasizing its commitment to ensuring the safety of merchant shipping in the region, the Navy has deployed warships INS Mormugao, INS Kochi, and INS Kolkata to maintain a deterrent presence.
MV Chem Pluto, a Liberian Flag Chemical/Oil Tanker, carrying 21 Indian and 01 Vietnamese crew, experienced a drone attack in December. The Indian Coast Guard secured the vessel, and subsequent inspection by the Navy’s explosive ordnance disposal team pointed towards a drone attack, requiring further forensic and technical analysis.
Additionally, the Indian government has intensified anti-piracy efforts in the Gulf of Aden after Somali pirates hijacked the bulk carrier MV Ruen. Despite the challenges, the Navy successfully intercepted MV Ruen, securing the release of an injured crew member.
As maritime incidents evolve, the Indian Navy remains vigilant, emphasizing the safety of vital shipping routes near the Indian EEZ.
