India’s pivotal role in the G20 summit is underscored as two significant agricultural initiatives, spearheaded by the nation during its presidency, find consensus within the G20 Agriculture Deputies Group. These initiatives, the “Deccan High-Level Principles on Food Security and Nutrition, 2023” and an international research initiative focusing on millets and ancient grains, are expected to be featured prominently in the G20 summit’s outcome document.
The G20 Agriculture Deputies Group, initiated during France’s G20 presidency in 2011, was established to address the volatility in global food prices. Over the years, it has evolved into a crucial platform for fostering cooperation among G20 members concerning food security and nutrition, especially in light of recent challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
This working group facilitates the exchange of information and cooperation on various global issues, encompassing food security, nutrition, antimicrobial resistance, food waste reduction, sustainability, and the development of resilient and inclusive food value chains.
India, as the current G20 presidency holder, has organized four meetings under its leadership, including Agriculture Deputies Meetings (ADM) in Indore and Chandigarh, a Meeting of Agricultural Chief Scientists in Varanasi, and the third ADM and Agriculture Ministers Meeting in Hyderabad.
In the wake of these meetings, the “Outcome Document & Chair’s Summary” was released, with ministers reaching a consensus on numerous points, with the exception of paragraphs 3, 4, and 5, from the 22-page document. Notably, India’s two pioneering agricultural initiatives received unanimous support from ministers.
The “Deccan High-Level Principles on Food Security and Nutrition, 2023” and the international research initiative dedicated to millets and ancient grains are set to play a pivotal role in shaping the G20 summit’s official outcomes.
These initiatives, which have garnered international acclaim, further India’s commitment to addressing global agricultural challenges, fostering food security, and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.
