External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, presently on a diplomatic visit to the UK, marked the festive occasion of Diwali in an official meeting with UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak at 10 Downing Street. As a gesture of goodwill, Jaishankar bestowed upon Sunak a cricket bat adorned with the autograph of the renowned sportsman Virat Kohli, along with a statuette of Lord Ganesh.
The occasion also witnessed Jaishankar expressing gratitude for the warm reception and gracious hospitality extended by Mr. and Mrs. Sunak. The diplomatic tête-à-tête delved into discussions regarding the ongoing negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement between India and the UK, emphasizing the significance of securing a comprehensive and mutually beneficial deal.
Accompanying Jaishankar was his wife, Kyoko Jaishankar, who, alongside her husband, participated in Diwali celebrations at the iconic BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir (Neasden Temple) in London during the course of their official visit. The temple, recognized as Europe’s inaugural authentic Hindu temple, served as a poignant backdrop for fostering cultural ties.
The visit holds strategic importance, considering the existing Comprehensive Strategic Partnership initiated between India and the UK in 2021. The bilateral engagement aims to reframe the relationship, aligning it with contemporary global dynamics. Talks have been underway to fortify ties through diplomatic initiatives, including the ongoing Free Trade Agreement negotiations, which reached their 12th round in August this year.
The discussions between Jaishankar and Sunak underscored the shared commitment to fostering a robust partnership, acknowledging its pivotal role in advancing common interests and addressing global challenges. The leaders, in agreement, emphasized the imperative of an ambitious and forward-looking approach in the ongoing negotiations.
Jaishankar’s diplomatic sojourn in the UK is slated to conclude on November 15, encompassing various high-profile meetings with dignitaries to bolster bilateral relations and provide fresh impetus to the amicable ties between the two nations.
