New York, In an exclusive interview with PTI, Jassee Singh, a prominent Indian-American Sikh leader representing Sikhs of America, emphasized that the Sikh community in the United States, as well as the U.S. government, does not support the Khalistan movement. Singh praised the Modi government’s efforts but highlighted unresolved issues, including the 1984 riots and the need for a comprehensive developmental package for Punjab.
Singh acknowledged the Modi government’s positive actions toward the Sikh community but stressed the importance of direct communication between the Prime Minister and the Sikh community, urging the resolution of lingering issues.
Addressing the question of Khalistan support, Singh stated unequivocally, “No. The majority of Sikhs don’t support the Khalistan movement.” He pointed out that only a small minority in India and the U.S. backs this movement.
Singh’s delegation, which has met the Prime Minister during each U.S. visit since 2014, commended India’s growth but called for more significant support for Punjab, particularly its youth, urging measures to curb migration and provide employment opportunities.
Regarding recent allegations of an Indian official’s involvement in a plot against a Sikh leader in the U.S., Singh believes it won’t have a lasting impact on bilateral ties, emphasizing the need for an independent investigation and justice.
While acknowledging short-term setbacks, Singh underscored the enduring strength of India-U.S. ties, citing mutual strategic interests.
