In a shocking development, Lalan Singh, the National President of the Janata Dal (United), tendered his resignation during the party’s National Executive meeting held in Delhi on Friday. Recognized as a key figure within the party and a close associate of Nitish Kumar, Lalan Singh’s political journey has been marked by twists and turns.

The Munger Lok Sabha representative and a prominent leader of the Bhumihar community, Lalan Singh, has been an integral part of JDU’s leadership. His resignation from the national president’s post is seen as a strategic move ahead of the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections, citing the need for party involvement during the busy election season. He expressed his support for Nitish Kumar to lead the party at the national level.

Lalan Singh, an alumnus of T.N.B. College in Bhagalpur, has been actively involved in politics since his college days, having served as the General Secretary of the college student union. His political journey saw participation in the JP Movement, demonstrating his early commitment to social and political causes.

The political dynamics within JDU have witnessed fluctuations over the years. Lalan Singh held the position of Bihar State President within the party but faced internal discord, leading to his removal in 2010 amid opposition to Nitish Kumar. However, their camaraderie was rekindled in 2013, and Lalan Singh was reinstated in the party.

After his defeat in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Lalan Singh took on a different role as a Member of the Legislative Council and became a minister in the Manjhi cabinet. However, he faced dismissal from the cabinet in 2015, only to regain a ministerial position when Nitish Kumar assumed office again.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Lalan Singh secured victory from the Munger constituency, contesting on the NDA ticket. His resilience and political maneuvering have been evident throughout his career, even when faced with challenges from opposition parties.

While Lalan Singh held the position of JDU National President, the party did not manage to transform into a national force. Despite his efforts to galvanize the party’s national presence, the challenge remains unmet.

As the political landscape gears up for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, JDU, under the leadership of Nitish Kumar, is set to face new challenges with the support of its allies, including the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Congress. On the opposing front, leaders from various parties have united against the BJP, indicating a complex electoral scenario in the coming months.
