Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar delivered a powerful keynote address on Human Rights Day, asserting that India stands as a beacon of human rights prosperity globally. Emphasizing the transformative norm of “No one above the law,” he commended the significant infrastructural growth in the country, deeming it essential for the proliferation and empowerment of human rights.
Dhankhar underscored the critical link between human empowerment, fiscal priorities, and the spine-strengthening of human rights. He expressed appreciation for the country’s massive infrastructural growth, stating its necessity for human rights proliferation. The Vice President attributed India’s ‘Amrit Kaal’ turning into ‘Gaurav Kaal’ to the blossoming of human rights and values.
Justice (Retd) Arun Kumar Mishra, Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), discussed the global impact of terrorism on human rights. He cautioned against condoning or sympathizing with terror acts, highlighting the ethical ramifications of advancing technologies.
Addressing contemporary challenges, Mishra emphasized the dual nature of the internet—useful yet capable of infringing on privacy through hate speech and misinformation. He pointed out its potential to fuel divisions and undermine human rights, particularly concerning violence against women and children in the online space.
The NHRC issued a notice to the Manipur government and its police chief in response to reports of a gunfight resulting in at least 13 casualties. Terming the situation “alarming and disturbing,” the rights panel took suo motu cognisance of the incident, emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation.
