New Delhi- In a recent development, senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has voiced criticism over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address in Parliament, labeling it as “selective” in its focus. Tharoor pointed out that PM Modi omitted any mention of the significant rights granted to citizens during the Manmohan Singh government’s tenure.
While Tharoor acknowledged that the prime minister delivered some commendable points and spoke eloquently, he was quick to highlight the absence of certain critical topics in Modi’s discourse. Specifically, Tharoor emphasized that PM Modi did not reference essential legislations like the Right to Information Act, food security measures, and the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) – all of which were implemented during Manmohan Singh’s prime ministership.
Tharoor stated, “He (Modi) said some very good things but he also did not say some things which he should have said. Our country has had many successes and failures, and he chose, according to his will, that is fine I would not criticize that.”
The senior Congress leader drew attention to the fact that there have been notable shortcomings during PM Modi’s leadership, such as the lack of parliamentary discussion during the demonetization episode. Tharoor emphasized that if the prime minister adopts a selective approach in his discourse, others have the right to be selective in their responses as well.
In his address, Prime Minister Modi commended the visionaries who shaped the nation, including Jawaharlal Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri, P V Narasimha Rao, and Atal Bihari Vajpayee. However, he also reminded the Lok Sabha of the ‘cash-for-vote’ scandal that occurred during the Manmohan Singh government’s tenure.
