Parliament Winter Session 2023 Live Updates: Shah introduces amended Bills to replace three criminal laws

In today’s session, Union Home Minister Amit Shah presented three amended bills in the Lok Sabha, aiming to replace existing criminal laws in the country. Shah informed the Speaker that the proposed amendments primarily focused on grammatical corrections, with some sections undergoing modification. The three bills in question are the Bharatiya Nyaya (Second) Sanhita, 2023; Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha (Second) Sanhita 2023; and Bharatiya Sakshya (Second), 2023.

Key Highlights from the Proceedings

1. Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha Proceedings Begin:

– Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi mentioned that the Standing Committee provided several recommendations on the three criminal bills presented by the Home Minister. The new bill versions are set to be introduced in today’s session.

2. Adjournment Motion Notice by Manish Tewari:

– Congress MP Manish Tewari submitted an Adjournment motion notice in Lok Sabha, aiming to discuss the situation of Navy personnel in Qatar and the steps taken to repatriate them to India.

3. Protest by Kerala MPs:

– MPs from Kerala staged a protest in front of the Gandhi statue, highlighting concerns about the lack of basic facilities, safety, and security for Sabarimala pilgrims.

4. Amit Shah’s Bill Introduction:

– Union Home Minister Amit Shah reintroduced three proposed criminal law bills with amended versions. The bills include Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Sakshya Bill, and Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. The amendments were made based on recommendations from a parliamentary panel.

5. Rahul Gandhi’s Critique:

– Congress leader Rahul Gandhi criticized Amit Shah, stating, “Pandit Nehru gave his life for India, he was in jail for years. Amit Shah is unaware of history. I cannot expect him to know history; he has the habit of rewriting it.”
