In connection with the security lapse during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Punjab on January 5, 2022, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gurbinder Singh of Bathinda was suspended. The incident occurred when PM Modi’s convoy was delayed for nearly 20 minutes on a flyover due to protesting farmers blocking the road.

The suspension follows allegations of dereliction of duty against SSP Gurbinder Singh, with images showing private vehicles approaching the PM’s cavalcade, raising concerns about a significant security lapse. The Ministry of Home Affairs issued a show-cause notice to Singh, directing him to explain why disciplinary action should not be initiated under relevant laws.

Deputy Secretary Archana Varma emphasized the grave security lapse during PM Modi’s visit, citing acts of omission and commission. The notice called for a response within a day, considering potential disciplinary action under the All India Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 1969.
