In a recent development, President Draupadi Murmu has advocated for the consideration of a bill, introduced by RJD lawmaker AD Singh in the Rajya Sabha, seeking special financial assistance for Bihar. The bill, presented as a private member’s bill in September, aligns with the demands of both RJD and JD(U) for the grant of “special status” to Bihar following its division over a decade ago.

Singh’s bill, now recommended for review by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, emphasizes the state’s loss of substantial revenue to Jharkhand since its bifurcation. Despite appeals for “special status,” the Centre has stood firm, citing the recommendations of the 14th Finance Commission.

The President’s endorsement brings renewed hope for Bihar, with leaders emphasizing the state’s economic challenges. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had previously highlighted the state’s backwardness on various parameters, and following a caste survey, called for special status, citing over 94 lakh families with monthly incomes up to Rs 6,000.

The President’s recommendation comes amid ongoing discussions about the economic future of Bihar and the potential benefits of special financial assistance. The bill’s consideration could mark a significant development in addressing Bihar’s economic concerns.

In a political landscape where regional demands often intersect with national policies, the fate of this bill will be closely watched for its potential impact on Bihar’s financial trajectory.
