In a significant development, a Qatar court has decided to reduce the sentences of eight former Indian Navy officers who were facing the death penalty in the Dahra Global case. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed the court’s verdict and stated that the death penalties have been commuted to jail terms. The Indian government is actively engaged with Qatari authorities, providing consular and legal assistance to the individuals involved.
The Dahra Global case involves eight former Navy officers who were arrested in August 2022 while working for Doha-based Dahra Global. Although the charges against them were not initially disclosed, sources suggested that the officers were accused of spying for Israel. The Qatari authorities filed a chargesheet in March 2023, leading to the death sentences pronounced on October 26, 2023.
Expressing concern over the ruling, the MEA spokesperson, Arindam Bagchi, assured that the Indian government is committed to providing support to its citizens. The detailed judgment from the Court of Appeal is awaited, and the MEA will continue pursuing the matter with Qatari authorities.
The individuals identified as Captain Navtej Singh Gill, Captain Birendra Kumar Verma, Captain Saurabh Vasisht, Commander Amit Nagpal, Commander Purnendu Tiwari, Commander Sugunakar Pakala, Commander Sanjeev Gupta, and Sailor Rajesh will now face jail terms instead of the previously imposed death sentences.
As diplomatic efforts persist, the Indian government focuses on securing the return of these individuals, emphasizing the importance of resolving the matter promptly.
