Due to the severe heatwave and extreme temperatures across Bihar, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has ordered the closure of schools until June 8. Following reports of over 50 children falling ill due to the heat, the CM instructed Chief Secretary Brajesh Mehrotra to ensure the closure of schools to protect students’ health. The CM also directed the Chief Secretary to convene a Crisis Management Group meeting to assess the situation and take necessary actions.
Schools to Remain Closed Until June 8
In compliance with the CM’s directive, the Chief Secretary has issued orders to the Additional Chief Secretary of the Education Department, the Principal Secretary of the Social Welfare Department, and all District Magistrates to suspend educational activities in government and private schools, Anganwadi centers, and coaching institutes from May 30 to June 8.
Unprecedented Heatwave Conditions
The Chief Secretary highlighted that Bihar has been experiencing an unprecedented heatwave, with temperatures exceeding 46 degrees Celsius in districts like Gaya, Aurangabad, and Kaimur. This situation is expected to persist until June 8, according to the Indian Meteorological Department’s representatives during the Crisis Management Group meeting held on May 29.
Decision Due to Extreme Heat
The decision to close all educational institutions aims to protect children from the severe heat. The Disaster Management Department’s guidelines and the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) issued by various departments will be followed to implement this directive effectively.
