In a pivotal shift set to take effect from January 2024, foreign postgraduate students enrolled in non-research courses in the United Kingdom will no longer be permitted to bring family members, including spouses and children.

This policy modification carries potential ramifications for the decision-making process of Indian students considering the UK as their study destination. Previously, under the dependant visa, international students, excluding undergraduates, were allowed to bring their family members to the UK. However, this exclusion may now impact the attractiveness of the UK as a study option for postgraduate students.

In an exclusive interview with Karunn Kandoi, Chief Experience Officer at ApplyBoard, a global education technology platform, insights were provided into the implications of this policy change and alternative education destinations with dependant-friendly rules for Indian students.

Key Points:

1. Impact on Student Choices:

– The policy change may influence the decision-making process for prospective students from India, potentially deterring them from choosing the UK as their study destination.

2. Definition of ‘Dependant’:

– The term ‘dependant’ varies across countries and is typically determined by immigration and visa regulations. In the UK, it generally refers to family members relying on the primary visa holder for financial support.

3. Rights and Benefits for Dependents:

– The rights and benefits for dependants under the amended rules in the UK include legal residence, work rights for adult dependants, access to healthcare, education for dependant children, and the ability to travel in and out of the UK aligned with the primary visa holder’s validity.

4. Comparison with Other Countries:

– Rights and benefits for international student dependants vary across countries. In the United States, Australia, and Canada, dependants can typically reside, work, and access education and healthcare, subject to specific visa categories and regulations.

5. Trends in University Choices:

– While the UK remains a popular destination for Indian students, feedback suggests a softening demand in 2024. Notably, there is an increase in the speed and volume of offers being released to Indian students by UK universities through the ApplyBoard Platform.

6. US, Australia, and Canada as Alternatives:

– The US issued the most dependant visas to Indian students; however, restrictions on dependants’ work may influence choices. Australia has seen a significant surge in new dependants, with a 136% increase year-over-year. In Canada, dependants have options for study permits, work permits, or visitor visas.

As the Spring 2024 enrollment approaches, these developments shed light on the evolving landscape of international education choices for Indian students and the considerations that will shape their decisions.
