The Supreme Court has refused bail to BRS leader K. Kavitha on Friday. She was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the Delhi Excise Policy scam. Following her arrest, she had approached the top court for bail. However, the court directed Kavitha to go to the lower court for bail, stating that it must adhere to a uniform policy for everyone and cannot allow direct approaches for bail in political cases.
The Supreme Court has asked the ED to respond within six weeks to Kavitha’s plea, where she challenged the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
K. Kavitha, along with being the daughter of former Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao, is also a member of the Legislative Council. The 46-year-old was arrested from her residence in Hyderabad by the ED a few days ago and is currently in custody until March 23.
Representing Kavitha in the Supreme Court, senior advocate Kapil Sibal argued that people were being arrested based on the statements of government witnesses without considering the merits of the case.
Meanwhile, the ED alleges that the Aam Aadmi Party benefited by ₹100 crores in the Delhi Excise Policy.
