New Delhi – In a significant diplomatic statement, the United States Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti, underscored the necessity for a bilateral resolution to the longstanding Kashmir dispute. During a press interaction, Ambassador Garcetti reiterated that the issue must be resolved exclusively between India and Pakistan, dismissing any third-party intervention, including that of the United States.

Ambassador Garcetti also addressed recent controversy surrounding the US Ambassador to Pakistan’s visit to Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK). He noted that US delegations had previously visited both sides of the Kashmir conflict, emphasizing that such visits were part of broader diplomatic engagements, including during the G20 summit.

While declining to comment directly on Ambassador Donald Blome’s recent visit to PoK, Ambassador Garcetti emphasized the importance of maintaining a neutral stance in the matter. Ambassador Blome had previously attracted attention for referring to the Indian-claimed territory as “AJK (Azad Jammu and Kashmir),” a terminology favored by Pakistan. This choice of words had sparked sensitivities in India, given the disputed nature of the region.

Ambassador Garcetti affirmed that the United States would continue to engage with the issue, emphasizing adherence to India’s stance for a bilateral resolution, as outlined in the 1972 Simla Agreement. India has consistently opposed efforts by Pakistan to internationalize the Kashmir dispute and involve international organizations in the matter.

The Ambassador’s remarks come as a reaffirmation of the United States’ commitment to a diplomatic solution that respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of both India and Pakistan in the Kashmir region.
