Bengaluru:TA Narayana Gowda, the state president of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, and 29 associates were arrested after their pro-Kannada protest turned violent. The activists, known for their strong language advocacy, damaged signboards in Bengaluru, sparking a renewed debate on language preferences.

The violent protests led to the arrest of Gowda and associates. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah promised an ordinance mandating 60% Kannada on signboards. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar emphasized the importance of peaceful protests and maintaining law and order.
Siddaramaiah said, “The upper half of signboards shall be in Kannada,” citing the Kannada Language Comprehensive Development Act 2022.
Shivakumar added, “Anyone can protest, but no one should cause damage to government or public property.”
