Bengaluru:TA Narayana Gowda, the state president of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, and 29 associates were arrested after their pro-Kannada protest turned violent. The activists, known for their strong language advocacy, damaged signboards in Bengaluru, sparking a renewed debate on language preferences.

Narayana Gowda: Key Points

1. Karnataka Rakshana Vedike Leader: Narayana Gowda heads the organization with a motto emphasizing the significance of Kannada.

2. Role in Border Dispute: The Vedike played a crucial role in the Karnataka-Maharashtra border dispute.

3. Cauvery River Water Issue: Gowda wrote a letter in his blood to PM Modi, urging intervention in the Cauvery River water issue.

4. Notable Protest Actions: The outfit gained attention in 2005 by smearing black paint on the face of Belagavi’s Mayor.

5. Background: Originally a garment worker from Hassan, Narayana Gowda later became the owner of a garment factory.

6. Accusations of Extortion: The organization has faced accusations of extortion.

7. Daughter’s Education Abroad:Social media users questioned why Gowda’s daughter studies in the United States instead of Karnataka.

The violent protests led to the arrest of Gowda and associates. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah promised an ordinance mandating 60% Kannada on signboards. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar emphasized the importance of peaceful protests and maintaining law and order.

Siddaramaiah said, “The upper half of signboards shall be in Kannada,” citing the Kannada Language Comprehensive Development Act 2022.

Shivakumar added, “Anyone can protest, but no one should cause damage to government or public property.”
