New Delhi, The recent Supreme Court ruling endorsing the abrogation of Article 370 and the subsequent formation of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh as Union Territories has ignited contrasting sentiments within the region of Ladakh. While the Apex Body Leh (ABL), representing social, religious, and political entities in the Leh area, expressed enthusiasm for the verdict, deeming it a crucial move towards national integration, the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) in the Kargil region voiced dissatisfaction, labeling the decision as “unsatisfactory.”

The Apex Body Leh (ABL) released a statement lauding the judgment for its potential to pave the way for Ladakh’s full statehood. The ABL highlighted Ladakh’s expansive geography, a highly patriotic population seeking due recognition, the imperative for accelerated development, its strategic location, and its distinctive ethnic and cultural identity as factors justifying Ladakh’s elevation to a state. This stance from Leh emphasizes a positive outlook on the Supreme Court’s decision and an aspiration for Ladakh’s enhanced political status.

Conversely, in Kargil, the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) expressed disagreement with the Supreme Court’s judgment on Article 370, asserting that insufficient attention was given to Ladakh. The KDA strongly advocates for Ladakh’s complete statehood and its inclusion under the sixth schedule of the Constitution. Sajjad Kargili, a member of the KDA, conveyed these sentiments through a video message, warning that the verdict establishes an unfavorable precedent for the federal structure of the Constitution, as it validates the demotion of a state to a Union Territory without the concurrence of the respective state legislature.

These differing perspectives reflect the intricate and nuanced sentiments prevailing within Ladakh regarding the constitutional changes, underscoring the need for nuanced considerations in addressing the diverse aspirations of its residents.
