In a recent development, a prominent member of the Indo-Canadian community has expressed grave concerns about the prevailing environment in Canada that has allowed Khalistan extremists to propagate violence and intimidate those who oppose their sinister objectives.

This concern arises amidst a diplomatic standoff between Canada and India, sparked by the assassination of a pro-Khalistan separatist in Surrey, British Columbia, in June. The community member warned against short-term political appeasement, emphasizing that it is not in Canada’s long-term interest.

Ritesh Malik, National Convener of the Canada India Foundation, spoke exclusively to PTI, highlighting the worrisome situation. He emphasized the importance of upholding freedom of expression for all and criticized the existing ecosystem in Canada that enables vocal, violent, and aggressive Khalistan extremists to suppress dissent through threats and illegal means.

Malik underscored that this issue goes beyond ideological differences; it disrupts communal harmony and damages relationships between countries. He emphasized the need for leaders in government, policy, and advocacy to address these issues for the greater good of Canada.

This matter has escalated into a diplomatic standoff between India and Canada, triggered by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s allegations in Parliament about a potential link between agents of the Indian government and the killing of Khalistani extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian soil. India vehemently rejected these allegations.

Malik also drew attention to the 1985 bombing of Air India Flight 182, which killed 329 people, primarily Canadians of Indian descent. He lamented the lack of justice for the victims and their families, noting that the ideology responsible for such acts has been allowed to thrive and grow in Canada.

He questioned the haste with which Prime Minister Trudeau handled the Nijjar case and suggested that diplomatic matters should be resolved through discreet channels rather than public statements. Malik stressed the importance of maintaining a healthy relationship between Canada and India, given the economic challenges faced by Canada post-COVID-19.

In conclusion, Malik urged a sincere resolution of these issues, leaving behind short-term political gains and focusing on long-term collaboration between both countries, emphasizing that both nations have progressive populations eager to foster a flourishing relationship.
