Israel ‘at war’, says Netanyahu, as fighter jets target Gaza after surprise Palestinian attack

In a sudden and shocking turn of events, Israel finds itself embroiled in a state of conflict, as fighter jets target the Gaza Strip in response to a surprise attack launched by Palestinian militants. Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has declared the nation to be “at war” following the audacious aerial and ground assault initiated by Palestinian militant groups.

Hamas and Islamic Jihad have asserted their involvement in the conflict, with claims of Israeli soldiers being held hostage. Despite circulating images on social media allegedly depicting an Israeli soldier in captivity, the authenticity of these images remains unverified, and Israeli authorities have not officially confirmed the seizure of military personnel by these militant groups.

Reports emerging from Al Jazeera indicate that “dozens of casualties” have been rushed to Gaza’s Al-Shifa hospital, leading to a heart-wrenching scene as grieving families converge on the medical facility.

On the international front, the United States has unequivocally condemned the Hamas attack, expressing condolences for the Israeli lives lost. The US White House National Security Council spokesperson, Adrienne Watson, emphasized that there is no justification for terrorism and affirmed unwavering support for Israel. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan has also engaged in discussions with Israel’s national security adviser, Tzachi Hanegbi.

Egypt has taken proactive steps to contain the crisis, with their foreign ministry stating that intensive contacts are underway at all levels to prevent further tension and instability in the region. Egypt’s foreign minister, Sameh Shoukry, has engaged in consultations with his counterparts from Jordan and the United Arab Emirates to address the escalating situation.

Notably, Egypt’s history of negotiations with Hamas and the Islamic Jihad has been instrumental in de-escalating previous conflicts in Gaza. The country brokered a ceasefire in August last year, putting an end to three days of intense fighting between Israel and the Islamic Jihad.

As the situation unfolds, Israeli media continues to broadcast interviews with the relatives of missing Israelis, and there are reports of civilians being held hostage by Hamas militants. A ground infiltration by Hamas gunmen into Israeli communities is ongoing, marking a significant development in the 16-year period since Hamas took control of Gaza.

Reports suggest that gunfire has erupted in the border town of Sderot, resulting in casualties among Israeli civilians and soldiers. Tragically, lives have been lost, with the death toll expected to rise. In retaliation, Israeli airstrikes have claimed at least one life in Gaza, while five Hamas militants have been killed inside Israeli territory.

Additionally, there are unconfirmed reports that 57 Israelis, both deceased and alive, have been taken into Gaza, raising concerns reminiscent of the 2014 conflict. This marks the first time since 1948 that Palestinian forces have managed to seize territory inside the Green Line.

The situation remains tense, with flames and smoke reported in various locations across the Gaza Strip, following Israeli airstrikes. Wafa news agency has reported multiple injuries, some of them severe, as a consequence of these attacks.

On the international stage, Saudi Arabia has called for an immediate halt to the escalation, closely monitoring the unfolding developments. The Saudi foreign ministry has reiterated its longstanding stance on the occupation and emphasized the need for a credible peace process.
