Days following the blast near the Israeli embassy, the Delhi Police has reached out to Jamia Millia Islamia, urging the university to provide CCTV footage from cameras positioned along its walls, sources revealed on Thursday.
The police suspect that an individual, believed to be the prime suspect behind planting the bomb on December 26 near the Israeli embassy, may have traveled from Jamia Nagar in southeast Delhi. The person reportedly took an auto-rickshaw near the Jamia Millia Islamia metro station.
“The letter was written to the university as multiple CCTV cameras are installed at the walls of the university. These cameras are faced towards Okhla Road, from where one of the suspects in the blast took the auto-rickshaw,” stated a police officer.
The accused, yet to be identified, is thought to be the primary suspect in planting the bomb near the Israeli embassy. The police have already questioned the auto-rickshaw driver in connection with the incident.
With the assistance of CCTV footage, the police traced the suspect’s movement towards India Gate after visiting the blast site at Prithviraj Road. While the NSG suggested that the blast was not an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) but possibly a locally made bomb, the official report is pending.
The blast occurred on December 26 in the area between the boundary walls of a house on plot number four and the Central Hindi Training Institute on plot number 2A on Prithviraj Road. Despite the lack of CCTV coverage in the vicinity, an “abusive” letter addressed to the Israeli ambassador was found near the blast site.
On December 29, the Delhi Police registered an FIR against “unknown” individuals and transferred the case from the local police station to the Special Cell.
