In a significant diplomatic development, Israel has announced the recall of its diplomatic corps from Turkey in the wake of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s vehement condemnation of Israel’s military operations in Gaza.

The diplomatic fallout transpired as President Erdogan reiterated his stance, labeling Israel as an ‘occupier’ and asserting that Hamas should not be classified as a ‘terrorist organization.’ This provoked a swift and decisive response from Israel’s Foreign Minister, Eli Cohen, who took to social media, formerly Twitter, to declare the recall of Israel’s diplomatic representatives from Turkey. This move is aimed at facilitating a comprehensive reevaluation of the relations between the two nations.

President Erdogan’s remarks, delivered during a pro-Palestine rally in Istanbul, conveyed his unequivocal stance that Hamas should not be categorized as a terrorist group, a position that irked Israeli authorities. He further emphasized that Israel is an occupier, delivering a message of non-compromise: “Erdogan speaks clearly because Turkey does not owe you anything.”

Notably, Erdogan, in a pointed critique, accused Israel of openly committing war crimes over a period of 22 days. He lamented the Western leaders’ inaction in demanding a ceasefire or expressing any substantive reaction to these actions.

Erdogan went on to declare his intent to label Israel as a ‘war criminal’ and mobilize international support for this designation. His statements were an unambiguous indictment of Western powers, whom he accused of being complicit in the ‘massacre’ of Palestinians in Gaza by the Israeli military. In the backdrop of the ongoing conflict, President Erdogan underscored the double standards and hypocrisy that he believed were at play in international responses to civilian casualties in different global crises.

The Turkish leader called upon the world to heed his call for dialogue, portraying it as an avenue to a just peace. He also accused Israel’s allies of fostering a ‘crusade war atmosphere,’ which, in his view, had pitted Christians against Muslims.

In the latest developments related to the Israel-Gaza war, Israel initiated an expanded ground operation, significantly escalating the conflict. Israel’s Defense Minister described the ground operation as having a seismic impact in Gaza, ushering in a new phase in the ongoing hostilities. Reports from Gaza residents describe the recent Israeli bombardment as the most intense of the three-week-long conflict between Israel and Hamas.

This recent diplomatic row between Israel and Turkey highlights the international reverberations of the Israel-Gaza conflict and underscores the complex geopolitical dynamics surrounding the issue.”
