In a significant move, Israel has announced the initiation of a desalination program in Lakshadweep, potentially enhancing tourism in the Indian archipelago amidst the ongoing India-Maldives diplomatic controversy.

Lakshadweep has gained popularity as a tourist destination, notably after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit.

The Israeli embassy, in a social media post, stated, “We were in #Lakshadweep last year upon the federal government’s request to initiate the desalination program.” It added, “Israel is ready to commence working on this project tomorrow.”

Accompanying the announcement were photographs showcasing the pristine beaches of Lakshadweep. The embassy encouraged those yet to witness the beauty of the #lakshadweepislands with enchanting underwater scenes.

This development comes amid rising diplomatic tensions between India and the Maldives due to critical remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi by some ministers in the Mohamed Muizzu government. The controversy escalated when celebrities urged people to explore domestic tourist destinations, including Lakshadweep, rather than the Maldives.

The Muizzu government distanced itself from the ministers’ remarks, calling them personal views, and suspended them to manage bilateral ties. The Ministry of External Affairs, unsatisfied with the suspension, summoned the Maldivian envoy and demanded the dismissal of the three ministers.

Google searches for Lakshadweep have surged, reaching the highest levels in the last 20 years. MakeMyTrip reported a 3,400% increase in searches for Lakshadweep on its platform since Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit.
