Shortly after the inauguration of the Maharishi Valmiki International Airport in Ayodhya by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the first IndiGo flight from Delhi to the new airport took off on Saturday afternoon. Captain Ashutosh Shekhar extended a warm welcome to the passengers with a significant message.

“I am fortunate that IndiGo gave me the opportunity to command a flight of this significance… We hope your journey will be good and happy. We will give you more updates. Jai Shri Ram,” the pilot said, followed by enthusiastic ‘Jai Shri Ram’ chants from the passengers.

PM Modi’s visit to Ayodhya included the inauguration of various projects, including the redeveloped Ayodhya railway station, the launch of Amrit Bharat and Vande Bharat trains, and the unveiling of developmental projects worth ₹15,700 crore.

The first phase of the Ayodhya Airport, developed at a cost of over ₹1,450 crore, boasts a state-of-the-art terminal building with an area of 6500 sqm, designed to serve about 10 lakh passengers annually. The building’s facade reflects the architecture of the upcoming Ram temple.

The terminal’s interiors are adorned with local art, paintings, and murals depicting the life of Lord Ram. Sustainability features include an insulated roofing system, LED lighting, rainwater harvesting, landscaping with fountains, a water treatment plant, a sewage treatment plant, and a solar power plant, aiming for GRIHA – 5-star ratings.

With a 2,200-metre-long and 45-metre-wide runway capable of handling Airbus A320, ATR-72, and Bombardier private jets, the airport is set to enhance connectivity, tourism, business activities, and employment opportunities in the region. The second phase will see the expansion of the runway to 3,200 meters, allowing for international flights.
