In a recent interview, renowned screenwriter Javed Akhtar delved into the evolving portrayal of the modern woman in Hindi cinema. He pointed out the underutilization of talented actresses like Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit, citing their lack of significant roles in their careers. Akhtar also criticized Yash Chopra’s film ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ for its portrayal of an empowered woman, calling it ridiculous.
Speaking on ABP Majha, Akhtar raised questions about defining the modern woman, stating that the liberal and conservative factions have struggled to articulate a clear definition. He noted that talented actresses like Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit, despite their capabilities, did not secure substantial roles in their careers.
Akhtar observed that contemporary filmmakers face challenges in depicting empowered women, often resulting in absurd portrayals. He specifically criticized Yash Chopra’s ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan,’ where the heroine declares, ‘I will sleep with men of all nationalities before getting married,’ calling it an unnecessary and unrealistic approach to empowerment.
‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ marked Yash Chopra’s final directorial venture before his demise in October 2012. Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif, and Anushka Sharma, the film sparked a debate on its portrayal of empowered women.

The reader argued that ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ portrayed Anushka Sharma as a passionate journalist and Katrina Kaif as someone steering her father’s business forward. The reader emphasized Yash Chopra’s significant contributions to Indian cinema.
