As of Friday morning, voter turnout on three Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal stood at 33.63%. Officials reported that polling commenced at 7 am under tight security arrangements in the constituencies of Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, and Alipurduar. These seats are reserved, with Cooch Behar and Jalpaiguri reserved for Scheduled Castes and Alipurduar for Scheduled Tribes. A total of 56.26 lakh eligible voters are registered across these constituencies.
An election official disclosed that by 11 am, Cooch Behar witnessed a 33.63% voter turnout, while Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar recorded 31.94% and 35.20% respectively. All three constituencies collectively have 37 candidates vying for victory.
By 1 pm, the voter turnout surged to 50.96% across the three central districts of West Bengal. Specifically, Cooch Behar registered 50.69%, Alipurduar 51.58%, and Jalpaiguri 50.65%. Notably, the Rajganj assembly segment under Jalpaiguri witnessed the lowest voter turnout. By 1 pm, 42.70% of the electorate had exercised their franchise.
Until 3 pm, voter turnout on the three seats surpassed 66%, with Jalpaiguri recording the highest voting percentage at 67.28%. The Rajganj area in Jalpaiguri saw the most significant voter turnout.
In efforts to ensure peaceful and impartial elections, the central forces deployed 263 companies across the three Lok Sabha constituencies. The highest concentration of central forces was observed in Cooch Behar, with 112 companies stationed. Additionally, the Election Commission decided to deploy 10,875 police personnel from the state police force.
In other news, Shubhendu Adhikari criticized the state government, alleging favoritism towards Mamata Banerjee. Meanwhile, Amit Shah is set to embark on a campaign trail to Bengal on April 10.
