Billionaire Mukesh Ambani revealed on Sunday that Reliance Industries, in collaboration with Canada’s Brookfield, is set to inaugurate a cutting-edge data centre in Chennai next week, signaling its entry into the rapidly growing market. Reliance’s investment in the joint venture, alongside Brookfield Infrastructure and US-based Digital Realty, positions them as major players in the Indian data centers market, expected to draw $5 billion in investments by 2025.
Ambani, speaking at the Tamil Nadu Global Investors Meet, highlighted the company’s focus on renewable energy, green hydrogen, and the establishment of a state-of-the-art data center in the region. The joint venture plans to launch a 20-megawatt greenfield data center in Chennai and has acquired land in Mumbai for an additional 40-MW data center.
The move intensifies competition in the Indian data centers market, with Reliance joining rivals Adani Group and Bharti Airtel Ltd. The venture aligns with the projected 40% annual growth of the Indian data centers market, fueled by the increasing localization of personal data, growing access to digital services, and the adoption of data-intensive technologies.
Ambani praised Tamil Nadu’s business-friendly environment under Chief Minister M K Stalin and expressed confidence in the state’s potential to become a trillion-dollar economy.
