In a groundbreaking move, the International Energy Agency (IEA) has started efforts to grant full membership to India, marking a significant step towards addressing global energy and climate challenges. The decision was announced in a joint letter by ministers from 31 IEA member countries during a meeting in Paris commemorating the agency’s 50th anniversary.

India, with the world’s largest population, plays a crucial role in shaping strategic policies to meet its growing energy needs. As a diverse energy producer and significant importer, India faces substantial challenges in managing energy production and consumption amidst escalating climate change concerns.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a video message sent to the Paris meeting, highlighted the positive impact of India’s enhanced role within the organization. He emphasized India’s commitment to supporting IEA missions with its expertise in technology and research, asserting that inclusion strengthens an organization’s credibility and capability.

Despite the complexity of transitioning rapidly away from fossil fuels, India’s dedication to clean energy production and consumption serves as a global example. In December of the previous year, at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Dubai, India received praise for its achievements. PM Modi also reminded the IEA meeting of India’s early fulfillment of the climate goals set during the 2015 Paris Agreement, underlining India’s dedication to addressing global environmental issues.

During the Glasgow Summit, Prime Minister Modi further pledged to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070, reinforcing India’s commitment to being a key player in resolving global climate concerns.
