Lahore: Pakistan Interim Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar found himself in the midst of an uncompromising volley of probing inquiries from students, turning what was meant to be an open dialogue into a challenging interrogation.
During a session at the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), Prime Minister Kakar encouraged students to fearlessly explore diverse paths for their future and embrace the value of learning from their mistakes. However, the atmosphere soon transformed as students relentlessly tackled pressing issues, leaving the prime minister on the defensive.
One student, in a direct and pointed manner, questioned the timing of his address amidst an economic decline, prompting the prime minister to provide a somewhat feeble explanation. He described Pakistan’s democracy as being in a transitional phase and referred to the controversial 2021 Senate elections, acknowledging the issue of rigging.
He admitted, “Forget about who did it; we all know who did it. I was also part of it.” He emphasized the need for well-defined principles beyond political considerations to ensure a stable democratic system.
Students also expressed their disappointment over the prime minister’s late arrival, suggesting it reflected a lack of respect for students’ time and knowledge. The incident quickly made waves on social media, with viral clips spreading across various platforms.
In response to a question about election delays in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the prime minister cited Article 254 of the Constitution, which clarifies that a delay or failure to meet legal time requirements doesn’t render an act invalid or unconstitutional. He clarified that setting election dates was the responsibility of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and not the caretaker prime minister’s mandate.
Finally, regarding the repatriation of Afghan nationals, Prime Minister Kakar highlighted the need to ensure the dignity of those being repatriated, particularly vulnerable groups, and expressed Pakistan’s historical commitment to hosting registered Afghan refugees.
In sum, this candid exchange of questions and responses showcased the students’ courage and determination to hold leadership accountable.
