In a significant development, Neelam Azad, one of the six individuals arrested in connection with the recent security breach in the Lok Sabha, has approached the Delhi High Court seeking her immediate release. Azad contends that her rights were violated during the remand proceedings, claiming she was denied the opportunity to consult a legal practitioner of her choice. She asserts that legal counsel was only made available to her 29 hours after her arrest on December 21.

Azad, a 37-year-old woman from Ghaso Khurd village, had been residing in Hisar for higher studies. Her arrest, which took place alongside wrestler Sakshi Malik’s mother and farmer leader Sikkim Nain during farmers’ protests, has raised questions about the circumstances leading to her involvement.

Speaking about Azad’s arrest, her brother Ramniwas expressed surprise, stating, “I got a call from my elder brother to switch on the TV immediately. He told me that Neelam was arrested in Delhi.” Ramniwas mentioned that Azad had been preparing for the Haryana civil services examination during her stay in Hisar.

Azad’s family, unaware of her visit to Delhi, is uncertain about the motivation behind her actions. Her mother commented, “I’m uncertain about why she took this action. Perhaps she did it with the intention of securing a job.”

Azad, belonging to the Kumhar community, had been diligently preparing for competitive examinations in Delhi over six months before her arrest. With her father working as a confectioner and both brothers involved in selling milk in the village, Azad’s arrest has brought attention to her unexpected involvement in the Parliament security breach.

As the legal proceedings unfold, Neelam Azad’s move to challenge the remand order brings a new dimension to the ongoing investigation into the breach.
