Rajasthan’s petrol pumps have initiated a two-day strike, causing significant inconvenience to residents. The Rajasthan Petroleum Dealers Association declared the strike in protest of the increase in Value Added Tax (VAT) on petrol and diesel. The two-day strike, starting at 6 AM on Sunday, is set to continue until 6 AM on March 12.
Empty Petrol Pumps in Jaipur
The impact of the two-day strike is visible in the capital city, Jaipur, and several districts across the state. Jaipur witnesses deserted petrol pumps, leaving commuters stranded. Pappu Singh, who traveled from a distant location to fill petrol at one of the pumps, expressed frustration, stating, “I’ve been wandering for the past 2 hours; all petrol pumps are closed.” Suresh Kumar, a resident of Jaipur, shared, “I came from Riddhi-Siddhi Circle, and there’s no sign of petrol supply anywhere. We are facing many problems, causing considerable distress as all petrol pumps are shut down.”
Reasons Behind the Strike
Sandip Bageriya, the Treasurer of the Rajasthan Petroleum Dealers Association, explained to news agency ANI that the association declared a 48-hour ‘No Purchase, No Sale’ strike starting at 6 AM, aiming to draw the government’s attention to the rising fuel prices. He emphasized that the increased VAT in Rajasthan is causing continuous losses for petrol pump operators in the state.
Protest for Lower VAT
Bageriya highlighted the persistent demand for a reduction in VAT in Rajasthan, as the current situation is negatively impacting petrol pump operators. He expressed disappointment that despite their prolonged demand, the government is not paying attention. Additionally, he pointed out that petrol is comparatively cheaper in neighboring states, adding to the woes of Rajasthan’s residents.
