New Delhi |In a significant reform aimed at maintaining a work-life balance for post-graduate (PG) medical students, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has announced that all PG students will now be entitled to a weekly off and a minimum of 20 days of casual leave annually.

However, the gazette notification released on January 1 lacks a defined “work hours” specification for resident doctors, a long-standing demand of associations nationwide. The notification mentions that doctors must work “reasonable working hours” and will be provided with “reasonable time for rest” each day.

Dr. Aviral Mathur, president of the Federation of Resident Doctors Association (Forda), expressed disappointment, stating, “We have been raising the issue of defining minimum and maximum working hours for a long time. It is sad that this crucial issue hasn’t been addressed properly in the new notification.”

The NMC directive also mandates PG medical students to spend a minimum of three months in a district hospital as part of their course curriculum. This move aims to expose them to rural healthcare services.

Additionally, the notification emphasizes that all counseling rounds for admission to PG courses must be conducted by government agencies through online mode to ensure merit-based and transparent admissions, eliminating any chance of corruption.

1. *ENVy: It’s 2023…. N now they r thinking of reasonable…fyi – reasonable is still not defined. They are thinking of introducing one off day per week … Still thinking… Lol. 20 leaves per year at the mercy of ur HOD. After all this will ask for Bond n rural service. And after all this will offer u Rs50,000 to 1 lakh salary…And no security from goons beating the doctor up. Then they cry “why are doctors leaving India”*
