In a distinguished gathering at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 2023 International Lawyers’ Conference, joined by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice DY Chandrachud and Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal.
Addressing the audience, PM Modi highlighted the often-overlooked aspect of legal language’s complexity within the justice delivery system. He underscored the government’s commitment to simplifying law, with a notable step taken towards streamlining data protection legislation.
The event witnessed the participation of eminent figures, including CJI DY Chandrachud and Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal. PM Modi commended the Supreme Court of Bharat for delivering judgments in a language accessible to litigants, bridging the gap between the legal system and the common citizen.
Moreover, Modi revealed that the government is actively striving to draft laws in simple language, making them accessible in Indian languages. He articulated the vision that legal documents should be available in two versions: one in conventional legal language and another in a language comprehensible to the average citizen.
Modi recognized a historical trend of complex legal drafting and praised the legal fraternity for their role as guardians of India’s justice system. He recalled the significant contributions of legal luminaries such as Mahatma Gandhi, B R Ambedkar, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who were all lawyers.
Furthermore, PM Modi contextualized the conference within India’s recent achievements, such as the passage of the women’s reservation bill in Parliament, the G20 Summit, and the successful Chandrayaan mission. He stressed the importance of a strong and impartial justice system as a foundation for India’s journey to become a developed nation by 2047.
CJI Chandrachud also addressed the gathering, expressing optimism about the global community’s willingness to engage and learn from each other. He highlighted the conference’s objective of facilitating meaningful discussions on legal matters of national and international significance, bringing together legal experts, judges, and scholars.
Union Minister for Law and Justice, Arjun Ram Meghwal, emphasized the conducive legal environment for business operations in India.
The International Lawyer’s Conference 2023, hosted by the Bar Council of India, revolves around the theme ‘Emerging Challenges in Justice Delivery System.’ Scheduled for September 23 and 24, this inaugural event aims to foster discussions on diverse legal topics, encouraging international collaboration and understanding.
