Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to embark on a rare trip abroad, planning visits to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia, according to sources familiar with the plans. The journey, a departure since the Ukraine invasion, underscores the significance of the Gulf states for Moscow, given their pivotal role in energy-export revenues.
Putin is scheduled to visit Abu Dhabi, UAE, this week, followed by a trip to Saudi Arabia. The visit includes a meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Kremlin adviser Yuri Ushakov confirmed Putin’s working visit to the two countries. The agenda is expected to involve discussions on OPEC matters, the Middle East conflict, and Russia’s chairmanship of BRICS.
This excursion takes place against the backdrop of the COP28 summit in Dubai, hosted by the UAE, where Putin will arrive after the departure of most world leaders. Additionally, the UAE has become a haven for Russian companies facing sanctions from the West.
Putin’s international travels have been limited since the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, resulting in various international sanctions. However, this visit signals a potential shift in his approach.
