New Delhi, Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi compared the time allotted for debating the Election Commission of India (ECI) Bill to two-minute Maggi noodles, stating MPs had mastered making their points within the time constraints. While acknowledging the efficiency, she suggested that more generous time allocation could have been considered for discussing the bill.

Chaturvedi expressed concerns about the ECI bill, emphasizing that the Election Commission’s role extends beyond overseeing elections to encompass adjudication of disputes within political parties. She criticized the 2:1 bill favoring the ruling dispensation, deeming it unfair and contrary to democratic and constitutional principles.

In a significant development during the Winter Session, the Rajya Sabha passed the Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Bill, 2023, regulating the appointment, conditions, and terms of office for the chief election commissioner and other election commissioners, as well as outlining the procedure for the functioning of the Election Commission.
