In a momentous event in the world of scientific history, a unique and autographed manuscript authored by the renowned physicist Albert Einstein, elucidating the genesis of his groundbreaking theories of special relativity (1905) and general relativity (1915), is scheduled for auction at Christie’s ’20th/21st Century Art Evening Sale’ on September 23.
The anticipated auction is poised to attract bids within the range of approximately $980,000 to $1,400,000 (equivalent to Rs 8.13 crore to Rs 11.61 crore) and will take place at the illustrious Waldorf Astoria Shanghai.
This extraordinary manuscript, originally published in a special supplement to the New York Times on February 3, 1929, is penned in German. Einstein was commissioned to unravel the intricate development of his two most iconic scientific contributions: the theories of special relativity (1905) and general relativity (1915).
Georgina Hilton, the head of Classic Art at Christie’s Asia Pacific, expressed enthusiasm about the manuscript’s introduction to their Shanghai saleroom, emphasizing its profound connection to Albert Einstein’s historical ties with Shanghai. Hilton stated, “We look forward to exciting global collectors and science enthusiasts with this remarkable piece of history, inextricably connected with Einstein’s groundbreaking contributions.”
The 14-page manuscript holds immense significance as it meticulously narrates the historical context behind the emergence of the theory of relativity, elucidates its underlying principles, and contemplates the possibility of achieving a ‘unified field theory’ to culminate the relativity cycle. It encompasses two equations and a diagram illustrating the structure of the spacetime continuum, alongside two pages of intricate scientific formulae.
This monumental auction event promises to captivate collectors and connoisseurs alike, offering them the rare opportunity to acquire a piece of history that intertwines with the pioneering genius of Albert Einstein.
