New Delhi ,Former Indian cricket captain Sunil Gavaskar delves into the intricacies of Rohit Sharma’s imminent challenge as he leads the Indian cricket team in the upcoming Test series against South Africa. Having been the standout performer as the highest-scoring captain in the ICC World Cup 2023, Rohit Sharma now faces the task of adapting his aggressive batting approach to the demands of Test cricket.

In an insightful interview with Star Sports, Gavaskar emphasizes the necessity for Rohit to make a comprehensive shift in his mindset, particularly considering his recent exploits in the One Day International (ODI) format. Gavaskar points out, “He will have to change the approach completely for Test cricket because he will have to think in terms of batting the whole day.” This adaptation becomes crucial as Rohit takes on the leadership role in the Test series, demanding a more patient and strategic approach from the captain.

Gavaskar’s observations are grounded in the context of Rohit’s impactful role in the ODI World Cup, where he played an attacking role during the initial overs, providing the Indian team with crucial starts. The cricket legend acknowledges the mental shift required for Test cricket, where the focus shifts from quick runs to enduring and accumulating throughout the day.

As India aims for its maiden Test series victory in South Africa, a challenge that has eluded them in seven of eight visits since 1992, Gavaskar envisions Rohit Sharma’s adaptation leading to substantial individual scores and, consequently, formidable team totals.

Rohit Sharma returns to captaincy in the highly anticipated 1st Test against South Africa at SuperSport Park in Centurion on Tuesday, marking a pivotal moment in his cricketing journey.
