Delhi, The trial runs for the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) project have been extended, aiming to make the 42km stretch from Duhai to Meerut operational by March-end. The NCR Transport Corporation (NCRTC) announced the extension of the 25km trial runs beyond the current 17km priority section in Ghaziabad.
The ambitious 82km RRTS project, estimated at ₹30,274 crore, seeks to connect Delhi, Ghaziabad, and Meerut with Namo Bharat trains boasting a design speed of 180kmph. Currently operational in Ghaziabad, the priority section spans Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Guldhar, Duhai, and Duhai Depot.
NCRTC officials stated that Namo Bharat trains are now undergoing trial runs beyond the priority section, covering stations at Muradnagar, Modinagar (north), Modinagar (south), and Meerut (south). The aim is to have this stretch operational by the end of March, pending safety clearances.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 17km priority section on October 20, with passenger operations commencing the next day. Initial trial runs for this section took place from January to April, including comprehensive tests of the trains.
The upcoming trial runs on the 25km extension will focus on systems and integration, such as signaling, tracks, stations, platform screen doors, overhead equipment, and related infrastructure. The extension is expected to benefit commuters in Ghaziabad and Meerut.
Once operational, attention will shift to the Delhi section, followed by the final stretch from Meerut (south) to Modipuram. The grand plan is to have the entire 82km RRTS project operational by June 2025. Commuters and stakeholders eagerly anticipate the enhanced connectivity promised by this significant infrastructure development.
